At No Cost

Δεν κοστίζει τίποτα · a documentary by Mairy Bouli

Danae works at a bar but dreams of becoming a ballet dancer. She decides to become an egg donor — it sounds like it comes at no cost. But the procedure is not that simple.

International premiere · Mostra de València 2026

Synopsis

Danae is one of many young women in Athens struggling to make ends meet. She waits tables, dreams of becoming a dancer and changes her hair colour every month. She decides to become an egg donor — for extra income, and out of solidarity with women who cannot become mothers. It sounds like it comes at no cost.

But with every injection the pain grows, while her gynaecologist pays her strange compliments. What lies behind the smiling faces of egg-donation adverts? Danae begins to realise she is caught up in something far bigger than she imagined — something that may cost her after all.

Producer’s note

At No Cost is a raw and emotionally precise coming-of-age film about the cost of care and bodily autonomy in contemporary Europe. We were drawn to the clarity of first-time director Mairy Bouli’s vision and her ability to reach complexity through intimacy. We believe the story will resonate across borders and raise urgent questions about gender, responsibility and a young woman’s control of her own body.
